Human Rights Perspectives on the Millennium Development Goals (November 11, 2003)

The Center for Human Rights and Global Justice organized a workshop on November 11, 2003 entitled Human Rights Perspectives on the MDGs. The meeting brought together key actors in the human rights and development communities to consider how best the MDG process can incorporate and promote human rights objectives and how human rights standards and civil society groups committed to them can best promote the MDGs. Speakers included:

  • Prof. Jeffrey Sachs;
  • Mary Robinson, the head of Ethical Globalization Initiative and former U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights;
  • Prof. Philip Alston, NYU School of Law;
  • Salil Shetty, Director, U.N. Millennium Campaign and former Chief Executive, ActionAid
  • Prof. Lynn Freedman, Heilburn Department of Population and Family Health, Columbia University
  • Prof. Paul Hunt, Human Rights Centre, University of Essex and U.N. Special Rapporteur on the Right to Health; and
  • Rory Mungoven, Advocacy Director, Human Rights Watch
